Commemorate the 100th birthday of Lowell native actress Bette Davis! Discover Lowell during Bette Davis’ days through a guided tour; revisit Davis’ life and movies through media displays and talks from experts; join us in a Hollywood Golden Age cocktail party, participate to a Bette Davis look (and dress!) alike contest, and vote for the best Martini in town!

Program of the night:

 

Lowell, 1908:  Birthplace of an icon. Bette Davis’ Tour of Lowell

5:30 – 6:30 pm

Starting point: Park Visitor Center Theatre, 246 Market Street

Join us on a 45-minute guided walking tour that will explore Lowell's downtown as it would have been seen and experienced by Bette Davis in 1908, the year of her birth.


The walking tour will highlight Lowell in 1908, the year of Bette Davis' birth. The tour will focus on facets of day to day life in 1908 Lowell including industry, community institutions, and businesses. Much of what we will look at would have been familiar, or even used, by the Davis family. The tour will make a loop through downtown Lowell with stops at Mack Plaza, and along Merrimack and Market Streets.  Although in Lowell a short time, the Davis family's long association with Massachusetts and New England played a role in shaping the life of the future movie star.

Bette Davis’ Life and Movies Panel Discussion

6:30 – 7:30 pm

Park Visitor Center Theatre, 246 Market Street

Joe Bella, from the Methuen Historical Society (MA), will present the screen and personal life of Bette Davis and will share his Bette Davis collection with the residents of Lowell.

Prof. Winifred Wood, Director of the Writing Program and teaching “Women in Films” at Wellesley College, will give the following talk:

Bette Davis in Context:  Melodramas, Past and Present

Love, sex, marriage, motherhood--these are the longings and fantasies
expressed for women through the melodramas that were so popular during the
30s, 40s, and 50s.  But more often than not--and especially in Bette
Davis's melodramas--delay and deferral rather than satisfaction expressed
a deeper condition of women's lives.  This brief talk shows how, with
special focus on the iconic _Now, Voyager_.



Nancy Tuttle from the Lowell Sun will moderate the discussion. Nancy is an expert of Lowell’s cultural history, and the organizer of an exhibit on Lowell's movie theaters and movie stars. She collects historical information on the history of Lowell as an entertainment mecca in the Merrimack Valley.

Admission $10 plus Cash Bar
