Winter Wonderland 2008

Come and see a lively downtown during WinterFest 2008! Enjoy your favorite shopping while strolling among the best art and cultural attractions that Lowell has to offer. Enter art galleries and museums for a preview of their latest exhibits; stop in revel in delicious winter drinks and desserts at the many different downtown cafes and restaurants. Shop at the Glacier Gallery Art & Crafts Fair, enjoy blues and folk musicians, and watch hip-hop, salsa and step performances. Participate to a scavenger hunt and browse in downtown businesses to win a Caribbean cruise! Walking street performers and choirs will enliven the downtown in many different locations. Bette Davis & Lowell Film Festival

Celebrate Lowell and regional talent in the art of the film! Join us on Wednesday night April 2nd to commemorate the 100th birthday of Lowell native actress Bette Davis. Discover Lowell during Bette Davis days through a guided tour; revisit Davis’ life and movies through media displays and talks from experts; and have a look at her original posters and pictures. Join us in a Hollywood-Golden-Age cocktail party, and participate to a Bette Davis look-and-dress alike contest! Come and see the first Lowell Film Festival: Immigration, Globalization and the All-American City on Friday and Saturday April 4th and 5th. Watch documentaries and films on immigration and globalization in the many downtown venues. Enjoy locally produced film shorts and discussions with film artists and producers, and investigate with us the character of Lowell, always an “immigrant city.”

Toying Around Town

Join The Revolving Museum and its partners in this public art festival in the Acre area of Lowell (North Common Park) to celebrate the family fun around Toys and Games! Explore youth and society through Toys and Games inspired activities. With art-making for children and adults, giant board games, ethnic food purveyors, art and crafts booths, and music & dance marching bands, this is a day for adults and kids of all ages! Free public art work-shops will amuse you, and art flags designed by local youth will decorate the surrounding neighborhoods.

Laotian Legacy

Explore Laos, a land of beauty and rich cultural heritage, through traditional arts, music, dance and food! Take advantage of the last days of the "Legacies of War" exhibit about the history of the Vietnam War-era bombing in Laos, on display at the Mogan Cultural Center. Join us for a documentary film and discussion around the impact of the U.S. bombing of Laos on the lives of individuals within the Laotian Diaspora. Discover and celebrate Laotian culture through classical and contemporary music and dance. Tour with us a local Lao market, attend a cooking demonstration, and revel in an authentic meal at a Lao restaurant!

"Ramayana" in Lowell

During the traditional and well acclaimed Southeast Asian Water Festival in Lowell, join us for a Ramayana, a series of dance events celebrating the Hinduization of the Southeast Asian cultures. Discover this mythological saga of Rama and his search for his abducted wife, Sita. Learn about this tradition, its ancient Hindu teachings and its profound influ¬ences on the art and culture of India and Southeast Asia. Enjoy the world acclaimed Angkor Dance Troupe, as well as visiting Cambodian, Hindu and Thai dancers. Buses will transport you to the Ramayana performances along the Vandenberg Esplanade. Complete your day with a food market tour of Pailin Plaza, a cooking demonstration and a free Cambodian buffet.

Catch the Literary Beat!

Come and join the Jack Kerouac Literary Month in Lowell festivities! On October 3rd through 5th attend the annual Lowell Celebrates Kerouac! festival, commemorate the 50th anniversary of the publication of Dharma Bums, and discover Buddhism influences on Kerouac's life and novels! On October 10th and 11th enjoy a Merrimack Valley Poetry Festival complete with jazz and blues performances in downtown cafes and pubs, open mic and poetry slams, and a Jack Kerouac related art exhibit.


Diwali Festival of Lights

Join us in the Diwali festival for a celebratory candle lighting ceremony as a sign of celebration, hope for humankind and the triumph of good over evil. Discover this religious celebration prominent in Hinduism, Sikhism and Jainism. Festivities will begin with a food tour in the Highlands, where a chef will walk you through the Indian market and prepare a traditional curry-and-tikka dish. End your tour with an Indian feast at a local restaurant. Buses will transport you to the downtown, where Indian music, dance and art will be on exhibition at local venues.

Holiday Arts & Crafts Walk

Come to Lowell and buy your holiday gifts local! Lowell venues, galleries and studios will exhibit arts and crafts for sale during the weekend. A self-guided tour will walk you throughout museums' opening exhibit receptions, meet-the-artist sessions, and restaurants exposing local artworks. Lively music performances will welcome you at various locations, and walking choirs will enliven downtown streets. Buses will connect shoppers from the downtown to the Western Avenue Open Studios.
